Gin and seafood for a birthday treat

Following on from our amazing two weeks at Aodann in May, here are some more highlights – this time its all about gin and seafood!
Our good friend joined us for her birthday and we know she likes a gin and tonic and a seafood supper – and we knew just the places for a special birthday afternoon and evening out….
So, we booked a tour at Badachro Distillery where Gordon and Vanessa have been making lovely smooth gin using local botanticals for some years now.
We’d visited back in the early days but at that time they weren’t doing formal talks and tours, so this was something new for us.
The visit started with Gordon inviting us into their home for a rather fine gin and tonic and to talk about how they ended up making gin in the Highlands. Then we went out to the distillery; its quite small and we marvelled at how much they managed to make!
And finally of course there was tasting. They also make vodka and sell whisky but we stuck to gin for fear of a headache!
From Badachro we hit the road over to Lower Diabaig for dinner at the “restuarant at the end of the road” AKA Gille Brighde.
As the crow (or eagle) flies, it isn’t far away but unfortunately there isn’t a road between Red Point and the village (there is a walk which I would LOVE to do one day) so the long way around via Torridon is the way to go – and what a stunning drive!
As we dropped down into the village an eagle flew right over us!
This is such a special spot. We all had wonderful fresh seafood and the restuarant was buzzing – a lovely mix of local people (some had arrived by boat) and visitors. Despite being super busy (you MUST book!) the service was spot on.
We hope this has given you some more ideas if you are visiting Scotland and the Highlands, whether you are self catering with us at Aodann or passing through on the North Coast 500.

This has to be the best backdrop for a gin tasting!

Gille Brighde – a perfect restuarant at the end of the road – definitely worth the stunning drive!
